1 bottle red wine
100g soft light brown sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
1 lemon sliced
1 orange sliced
4 whole cloves
1 star anise
Grating of fresh nutmeg/pinch nutmeg
150ml brandy or port
Put all the ingredients, except the brandy or port, into a large saucepan. Bring the wine to the boil to dissolve the sugar. Remove immediately, cover the pan and leave to stand for 5 minutes, allowing the flavours to infuse. Strain to remove the spices & fruit slices.
Add the brandy/port & serve warm, with a fresh slice of lemon in each glass.
